Socially Acceptable
The following types of slavery are socially acceptable on Grimmwold.
Consensual Slavery – Where one person chooses to be the slave of another, often nicknamed "Bedroom Slavery" on Grimmwold. This type of slavery falls under the "What you all do in your own house is none of anyone's business". However, there may be certain towns that will not be socially alright with it in a public setting, and may question the slave to make sure that it IS consensual. Some towns may simply believe that it is "inappropriate" to flaunt it in public.
Indentured Servitude – Slavery that is for a specific time period, or slavery that can "reasonably" bought out by the slave. In the second case, the slave must have the ability to make or save money to purchase their freedom for the specified amount. Traditionally, this kind of servitude is for "a year and a day", i.e. 365 days. Often implemented to pay of some kind of debt, or in return for a rather large single sum salary provided at the end of the term.
Criminal Slavery – Slavery as a criminal punishment for a specific time, usually no more then a year and a day.
Familiars – A type of slavery specific to witches and wizards and their familiars. This is typically considered acceptable because the familiar often enters into the association willingly, for a term of service or has the personal means to end the relationship.
Not Socially Acceptable, but Not Morally Repugant
Other types of slavery that is not as social acceptable but is not morally repugnant.
Love Slaves – Slaves created by the use of some type of love potion/spell. For the most part non-family members won't get involved in freeing a love slave. There are many reasons for this. One, if they have been a love slave for a while, then they might actually be in love due to the nature of form and essence. Two, love spells are pretty wild magic, and only the most experienced witches are willing to mess with them, and most wizards won't touch them with a 10 foot pole. Three, natives have a pretty strong belief that magic is common and to some degree it is the persons own stupidity if they get bespelled by this kind of magic, with old grandma's often suggesting the person wanted it.
Company Store – This is technically slavery by manipulation. A person goes to work for a company and is paid a wage. A store is available for the employees to purchase goods, but the cost of normal day to day living goods is always more then what the person gets paid, so they are continually in debt with no way out. Most good people consider this to be a problem and will try to stop it, or buy out the company or pay of the debts. But unless the workers are in constant mortal danger its not considered morally repugnant.
Morally Repugnant
Slavery that is morally repugnant to enough of the general population to cause action by those people, often violent action.
- Slavery which puts a sentient being (and most things in Grimmwold are sentient) into a situation of continual mortal danger for which they have no option or recourse.
- Unwanted physical or mental rape, especially of innocents, but by no means limited to innocents
- Non-consensual slavery with no reasonable means or recourse to end the term of service.
Examples
These are some examples of grey areas:
Pirates come to Hamelin and sell them a bunch of abused unkempt girls. Hamelin buys them, treats them well and sets a specific term of service for the continued slavery. This is grey, because most good people would just free the girls, but as long as the girls are well treated and have a reasonable term of service, most won't consider it bad enough to interfere. Lecture yes, attempt to buy yes, go to war no.
